After several years of relative stability, the CPU socket changed last year. Intel moved from the 478 pin socket introduced shortly after the first Pentium 4 CPU to a new "LGA" socket with 775 pins. The CPU is now held more firmly in place with a clap that goes over the CPU chip rather than the earlier design that held the chip in place just by its pins. AMD abandoned its old Athlon socket for transient 754 pin socket, then adopted a 939 pin socket, and there is an indication that there will be a third new AMD socket sometime next year.
